PAINTING ON MASONITE VS CANVAS OR CANVAS PANELS

                       MY  SECOND "NATURE AND WILDLIFE" SUBMISSION READY!

     Ok,  it is done and ready to submit.  This is a painting of the St. Augustine area salt marsh on the Matanzas River. I am going to name it "Matanzas River Inlet".  It again has a lot of detail which is necessary for this show.  I am not sure what my third submission will be, but at least I have time to think about it.  We cannot submit any paintings we have shown there before and they must be for sale which knocks out the one I was going to submit.  I don't want to sell it!  So when I decide on what I want to do I'll let you know, ok?  The photo is below, I hope you like it!

I let this set for a couple weeks to see if I thought it was done.  It wasn't...it just needed more.  So I added more birds, more orange to the front left grass to give more depth, and increased the height of the background trees on the far left. Plus I added more purple to increase the depth of the shadows, etc. and of course increased the highlights of the trees.  I finally have declared it finished.  Just remember,  the more you do highlighting and darken shadows, the more 3-D effect you get.

It is interesting.  I was looking at this painting and something kept "niggling" at me.  I finally decided after a few days of looking that it isn't finished after all.  I am going to do some refining of the two largest palm trees.  Actually, I am going to add another taller tree among the group.  The group just needs to go further up into the sky and further to the left.  And, the tree that looks in the middle is actually supposed to be in the FRONT of the biggest tree not behind it as it sits.  Like I said, it pays to look at a painting for a while before we varnish.  We usually find mistakes when we do! I actually think I will tone down the background grass also.  Ok, so I have fixed this painting.  Interestingly, I did NOT make the middle tree look like it is in front.  I just made the trunk longer as though it is going THRU the top of another tree and added greenery at the top of that trunk.  (see photo on the next post)  Then I added a smaller trunk BEHIND the other two that ends in the original green top of the middle tree.  Rather a good answer to the problem if you ask me!  So the REAL finished photo is below!
