WHEN DO I RAISE MY PRICES?
You may recall a month ago (July 19th) I did a blog on pricing your artwork. I mentioned that if your artwork is flying off the walls, you need to raise your prices. Well, I just realized that in the last six months I have sold 28 paintings! I would definitely call that "flying off the walls"!
I must now decide how much to raise my prices. Remember, most artists price by the square inch, so we think by the inch, not by dollar amount. I have been thinking that I will raise my prices 15-25 cents per inch. Now that may not sound like a lot, but when we apply that increase to a canvas that is 36 x 48, 15 cents equals a price increase of $260. So the larger canvas will be increased 15 cents and the smaller 25 cents per inch.
BTW, I picked up another location to show my art! I was at the doctor's office and noticed a large bare area on their wall. (it is a new location for them) I told them they needed art to fill the space and I showed them a picture of my "VIEW FROM A HAMMOCK" painting saying it would be perfect for that spot. She readily agreed! So I delivered it with a nice card to place below it with the name of the painting, the price and my contact info. It has been there for a week now. My son-in-law has there since and she told him that many have been admiring it, including her! I will approach her about more art for her office now. It can be very easy if the time is right. Keep your eyes open for any opportunity. Just be sure it is a good fit for your work.
Well, the latest paintings I sold were another set of "PSYCHEDELIC PALMS". Each set I paint has different colors and different type of canvas. I always use Red, Orange, and Yellow, and this time the cool colors are green, blue and pink. The canvases were two 12 x 24 gallery wraps. See them below. I enjoy painting these because they are quick and easy, and a lot of fun to do! And they are "bread and butter" paintings, meaning they bring in good money and don't take months to sell like gallery paintings can. The same is true of my "Surfboard" paintings. These are "tourist' type paintings for the area in which we live. Perhaps where you live there is something you can turn into "bread and butter" paintings. Think about it. See photos below.

The newest set I just finished I used a light phthalo blue, green, but instead of pink I went with purple, plus the reg yellow, red, and orange. This way each set is different from the previous. Did I mention that I use a different size or type of canvas as well? This time I used six individuals each 10 x 20 and 2" deep gallery wrap. These will be more expensive for the set due to the size and cost of the canvas, but they are more dramatic! See photo below.

Oh, I also sold my last 'SURFBOARDS" painting. That makes four of those as well. I guess I need to get busy and paint more! They are on gallery wrap burlap that has heavy gesso in the middle, but leaves the outer inch exposed as plain burlap. It is a nice idea so I purchased them at Hobby Lobby. You should try some paintings on burlap. It can be fun! |
